How to value a premium domain name

A practical framework for valuing category-defining .com domains: phrase strength, buyer breadth, comparables, and carry cost.

Domain valuation is not a black art. Serious buyers and sellers converge on the same four inputs. Here is the framework we use for SecureAIFrameworks.com, and for category names generally.

Phrase strength

Ask one question: does the domain read like a phrase people already type, or like a brand someone has to invent?

  • Category phrase (“secure AI frameworks”) carries its own demand. Search volume, press language, and procurement documents already use it.
  • Invented brand (“Vantiq”) starts at zero demand and spends marketing budget to create it.

The premium belongs to category phrases, because the marketing budget is already spent — by the market.

Buyer breadth

A name is worth more when many kinds of buyers can use it without conflict:

  1. A vendor building an AI governance platform
  2. A consultancy selling AI risk programs
  3. A standards body or research institute
  4. A government or regulator-facing program
  5. An investor or holding company acquiring category real estate

Narrow names (single product, single geography, single persona) cap out quickly. Broad names price like real estate, not like software.

Comparables

Anchor to actual transactions in adjacent categories, not to asking-price theater. Category-defining two- and three-word .com names in enterprise software have historically cleared six to seven figures when the phrase is durable and the buyer pool is deep. The anchor question is: what would a single enterprise deal, or a single avoided rebrand, be worth against this price?

Carry cost and time

The alternative to buying is renting attention: paid search against the phrase forever, plus the conversion tax of an unmemorable name. Against a $250,000 ask, compute how many quarters of paid acquisition the domain replaces. For most AI security vendors, the answer is measured in months.

If the phrase describes your business in four words, the valuation question is not “is it worth it” — it is “how long until someone else owns it.” See why this is a category domain and how transfers are escrowed.
