How escrow-protected domain transfers work
The mechanics of buying a premium domain safely: written terms, escrow funding, authorization codes, registrar transfer, and release.
Buying a domain name worth five or six figures should never be a wire to a stranger with a promise. The process below is how SecureAIFrameworks.com and other premium names move — and what each side is protected from.
1. Written terms first
Before money moves, both sides confirm three things in writing:
- Price and currency — e.g. $250,000 USD, inclusive of transfer fees
- Transfer method — registrar push (same registrar) or inter-registrar transfer with auth code
- Timeline — target completion window, typically 24–72 hours once escrow is funded
A one-page agreement is enough. The point is that nothing is left to interpretation.
2. Escrow funds the purchase
The buyer wires to an escrow service (Escrow.com and similar), which holds the funds and states the release conditions. Neither party holds the other’s money during the transfer. Escrow is the difference between a transaction and a gamble.
3. The domain is unlocked and transferred
The seller:
- Unlocks the domain at the registrar
- Provides the authorization (EPP) code
- Confirms the admin contact email is reachable
The buyer initiates the transfer from their own registrar account. For same-registrar purchases, a push avoids the transfer delay entirely.
4. Verification and release
Escrow confirms the WHOIS/registrar record shows the buyer, then releases funds to the seller. The buyer should confirm:
- The domain appears in their registrar account
- DNS control is in their hands
- Lock and 2FA are set on the account
5. Post-transfer hygiene
Change the registrar account email, enable hardware or app-based 2FA, and set the domain to auto-renew. Most losses in this market come from weak account security after a clean transfer — not from the transfer itself.
